Driving by this restaurant along Kingsway has always been intriguing as it looks like someones house. Now that we had the chance to go, it can be confirmed that walking through the “yard” feels like you are arriving at a friend’s house party. Even more deceiving, you feel like there is nobody here and you have arrived at the party too early, that is until you walk up the stairs, through the front door, and realize the restaurant is busy, alive, and happening.
The decor of Oyama Sushi is really quite cozy, with hardwood floors, tables throughout the “house”, and we even got to sit next to the fireplace (which wasn’t on). The food is excellent too as they have a large number of specialty rolls. We ordered the Red Dragon (salmon on top of deep fried shrimp), the Rainbow Roll (tuna, salmon, tai, tako with ebi on top), the Ever Green Roll (cream cheese, mango, carrot, cucumber, avocado inside and wrapped with soy bean paper), and the Forest Roll (mushroom marinated in special sauce, cucumber inside, oak mushroom on top, decorated with organic salad and house dressing). All of these rolls were unbelievably good.
While the food and decor were great, the service was a bit disorganized from the moment we walked in. Getting a table seemed more complicated than it should, then we struggled to find someone who could take our order. The food came really quickly, which was great, but getting the bill was difficult. We’re willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that it was a busy Friday night and will try again.

Oyama Sushi was more than a pleasant surprise and the food was excellent. While it felt like going to someone’s house, the best part is you don’t have to bring anything.

FYI decades ago this home was actually a funeral parlour and as a child I viewed my deceased grandmother’s remains in the basement prior to her funeral.
Sushi Oyama used to be our favourite go-to place for Japanese food. My daughters always asked to go their first and we have been there a lot over the years and ordered takeout from Oyama as well. Unfortunately, my wife and daughter now refuse to eat there because the last time we ordered from there, they both got terrible food poisoning from the California roll. My girls are young so we take the precaution to not give them sushi with a lot of raw ingredients (i.e. raw fish) but it was the California roll from Oyama that caused my older daughter to be violently sick and throw up 13 times over a period of 9 hours. My wife also became sick because my girl shared some of her California roll with her. Contacted the restaurant and the manager went out of her way to deny any responsibility (it was the only food we had for dinner that night). Totally ignored us and then I learned from other friends that they had been sick too after eating there. So beware that if you eat at Sushi Oyama and get sick, management will pretend it never happened or that they are not responsible.
