Nestled between Pizza Hut and a used appliance store along Hastings Street in North Burnaby, Sushi Bar Kilala is easy to miss if you’re not looking for it. The sign out front has “Sushi” written in large letters and it wasn’t until we parked and walked to the front of the restaurant that we were able to read the rest of the restaurant’s name on the sign. With less than half-a-dozen tables, this place is small and if you’re planning on eating in, plan to be there early.
The food was great and the two staff went to extra pains ensuring the plates of food arrived timely and had good presentation. We even watched as the chef used a small blow torch to slightly braise the unagi, giving it that extra touch of deliciousness.
We ordered a BC Roll, Terriyaki Chicken Donburi, Unagi Pressed Sushi, Futo-Maki Roll, Vegetable Roll, Avocado Nigiri, Avonegi Roll, and Gomae. It all tasted really good! Of particular interest was the Unagi Pressed Sushi which is like a roll but has been pushed down in a wooden form and compacted with the BBQ Eel on top. Vegetarians will really enjoy the Futo-Maki Roll, which consists of shiitake mushroom, egg, spinach, cooked gourd, and cucumber (ordered without the fish powder). As well, the Avocado Nigiri was very well presented.
If I were being very picky and wanted to complain about something, I might suggest they change the fluorescent lights to something that gives a nicer ambiance but really, that’s just too much. Inside was very clean and they even raked the gravel around the plants outside so the rocks were in nice wavy lines. The fact that it is somewhat hidden and you don’t expect a sushi restaurant to be there gives it a sort of ambiance.
Sushi Bar Kilala was a nice discovery and it’s certainly a place we will return to. It wasn’t just the great food that we enjoyed but also it didn’t have that “frantic-ness” that some other nearby restaurants have. This made us feel relaxed and wanting more.
