The only full sushi restaurant located at SFU on Burnaby Mountain, Togo Sushi has a decent selection of Japanese Food, from sushi rolls to Donburis, to Bento Boxes. The location is right across from Nester’s Market and they have some indoor seating while they primary do a lot of takeout.
We ordered several different sushi rolls and Agedashi Tofu, and what’s a bit different from Togo Sushi is that you order at the front and then you pick up your full order when it’s ready. They combine all of the sushi into paper trays and then give you plastic trays as “plates” to use.
The first roll we ordered was a specialty roll called the Rainbow Roll. This was a “special” California Roll that was topped with salmon, tuna, ebi, and avocado. The colours certainly made it seem like a rainbow. This sushi roll was ok but we felt as though it didn’t have a lot more taste than a California Roll and maybe was not worth the extra.
The Tropical Roll was another California Roll but this one was topped with Mango and Mango Sauce. This roll was pretty tasty with the added mango and maybe worth a few dollars more as a treat.
The Crispy Crunch Roll consisted of deep fried salmon, crab meat, green onion, spicy mayo, and spicy teriyaki sauce. This roll was really good and one that is probably better when it’s warm so that there is some “crunch”. The roll was well put together and the spicy sauces gave it a slight kick, making this roll one of our favourites.
The Spicy Tuna Roll and the BC Roll were very par for the course, with the BC Roll being fairly nice. Sometimes, these standard rolls can be filled a bit too much with cucumber but the rolls were a perfect balance of ingredients and were quite delicious.
For vegetarian rolls, we ordered the Mango Roll and the Yam and Vege Tempura Roll. The Mango Roll was excellent as the combination of mango and avocado goes really well together, even with a bit of cucumber. The Yam and Vege Tempura Roll was also good and the tempura was a bit warm, which we suspect makes a big difference so that it also retains some of its crunchy texture.
The ambience of Togo Sushi SFU is mediocre but it’s not a place where people tend to sit and enjoy a meal for a long period of time. The music was quite loud and a style not for everyone and people were constantly coming and going during a weekday dinner hour. Still, it’s the only full sushi restaurant on campus and near the UniverCity community on Burnaby Mountain.
The sushi was pretty good and we would definitely try Togo Sushi SFU again when we’re up on Burnaby Mountain. There are several other ToGo Sushi locations around Metro Vancouver, including another location in Burnaby at Metrotown.
