Located in the Market Crossing strip mall along Marine Way in South Burnaby, Genji Japanese Restaurant offers a wide selection of sushi, donburi’s, and other Japanese food items on their menu. The restaurant is located at the eastern end of the mall and is easily missed if you’re not looking for it.

The sushi was decent but nothing to rave about, nor complain about. We ate the California Combo, which came with a California Roll and 5 Nigiri Sushi, we also ordered an Avocado Roll, Vegetable Roll, and Gomae Roll. They have a selection of specialty rolls and we decided to try the Burn Out Roll, which consists of prawn tempura, avocado, covered with spicy scallops. It was quite tasty and very, very spicy but not sure it was worth the $10+ for the roll.

Service was good and the restaurant had a nice atmosphere to it inside. The area is close to a lot of business parks and other industry so we were imagining that the this sushi restaurant would be a popular weekday lunch spot, particularly since there’s not much else nearby.

The bottom-line is that if you’re looking for sushi and passing through the area along Marine Way, Genji Sushi should meet your needs. If you have more time or want a nice place for dinner, you’re better off driving up the hill and finding a place along Kingsway.

June 4th, 2016 I went to Genji Sushi at Market Crossing. I had been there about 4 times before and received slow service and people who could use training in friendly customer service. They had missed a yam roll order on one of my take out orders. This time they were really slow and royally screwed up my order. A combination of incompetence and language barrier. I had two different people, a female and a male, who couldn’t seem to understand my order correctly. In the end they still hadn’t given me my entire order ( 45 minutes later and they weren’t busy ). I only had 1 miso soup, alaska roll, and 4 pieces of salmon sashimi and the girl tried to charge me $56.00! I had to argue with her to get it right. Then it was $46.00! The cook had to correct her as I pointed out the menu items to her at the cash register. Finally I paid the correct amount of around $15.00 but I did not tip after this bad experience. I wanted to blow up from the frustration but controlled my temper. I will never go there again despite the food tasting alright.
