Located near Metrotown along Nelson Avenue, Tomoya Japanese Restaurant has a large selection of sushi and specialty items from the kitchen. The food is fairly good, definitely above your average sushi restaurant and each item on the menu is accompanied by a photograph to help you visualize what you’re going to eat. The photos, however, make it more difficult to choose what to order!
We finally ended up ordering two specialty rolls, the Atlantic Roll and the Flying Dragon Roll. Both of these sushi rolls were very tasty, although not the best specialty rolls we’ve had. We also ordered a Salmon Tempura Salad which was drizzled with a house dressing. The tempura was wonderful but once that was eaten, just a big bowl of iceberg lettuce remained, which is far from the most exciting lettuce to eat.
For vegetarian rolls, we ordered one specialty roll: the Garden roll, which was very tasty. At Tomoya you have the option of ordering Healthy Rolls with brown rice, so we ordered the Healthy Avocado and Mango Roll. However, we came to the conclusion that brown rice is not suitable for sushi.
The restaurant is small but the ambiance is warm and it has a funky feel to it. The service was great, our food came out fairly quickly, and we never felt rushed, which makes for a much more relaxing dinner.
A couple of other things I noticed while we were here is that Tomoya not only offers takeout, they also provide a delivery service. Also, their lunch specials are priced really well and obviously they are looking to compete with all of the other luncheon restaurants in the Metrotown area.
The restaurant was nice and the sushi was definitely above average and worth recommending. Although there were a few things that were just ok, the good items were great and the menu is so large that it keeps us curious as to what else there is.
