Take Sushi is located in North Burnaby on Hasting Street, about half-a-block east of Willingdon, and has an assortment of excellent specialty rolls and regular Japanese food.
The first roll we tried was one of their specialty rolls, the Kiwi Roll which included fresh kiwi, avocado and crunchy tempura bits inside, with slice of lightly seared Albacore tuna and green onion on top. The kiwi roll was definitely different from anything we have had and it was delicious! The kiwi inside was nice and sweet and the tuna made it taste like some kind of special sushi, as opposed to being some sort of fruity experiment. The crunchy tempura inside also gave it a bit of texture, adding to the whole experience. This roll was very good.
In order to try an assortment of Nigiri, we ordered the Deluxe Sushi Combo, which came with 8 pieces of assorted Nigiri and a Dynamite Roll. Most other restaurants include a Salmon and Tuna Roll with their assorted Nigiri combos, so the Dynamite Roll felt like a major upgrade. The Nigiri was fresh and very well presented. All seafood items were excellent and it was nice to also have an Avocado Nigiri as this too is different from most other restaurants. The Dynamite Roll was crunchy and delicious and didn’t taste as though it had been made and refrigerated several hours earlier.
We ordered several vegetarian items, including a Yam Tempura Roll, and Asparagus Roll, and an Avocado Cone. All were very good, especially the Avocado Cone. The Yam Tempura was crispy and the Asparagus was not chewy.
Lastly, we couldn’t resist ordering BBQ Prawns Wrapped in Bacon which came with 4 skewers. These were really good too, although the prawns may have been slightly overcooked and a bit dry. However, they were wrapped in bacon and who doesn’t like bacon?
The restaurant was really busy when we went and we had to wait for a seat. The ambiance wasn’t anything special but the service was efficient and staff were very friendly. Parking is a bit of a challenge in the area as there is very limited parking along this section of Hastings and the closest is a small parking lot along Willingdon behind the buildings. Still, there seemed to be a fairly steady stream of people coming in to pickup their orders.
We were very impressed with the food at Take Sushi and will definitely be returning. The Kiwi Roll was something that was certainly different and we will be looking forward to trying additional specialty rolls. We will aim to go on a week night that is, hopefully, not as busy though.
