Sushi Gen is located in the Lougheed Mall area towards the back near Cameron Street, right next to the Red Robin. They serve a large selection of sushi items that include many interesting specialty rolls as well as several items from the kitchen.

The menu is full of interesting looking specialty rolls, so we decided to try several. The first was a vegetarian roll, the Veggie Flower Roll, which was made of a cucumber sashimi roll with organic veggies and house salad dressing. This roll was essentially a salad disguised as a sushi roll. It’s certainly different and was a great salad but nothing more special than that.

Next we tried the Mango Roll, which consists of double prawn tempura, mango, cucumber, and crab meat wrapped in soy paper and topped with chopped scallop, masago and 2 special sauces. This delicious roll was very rich, which made finishing it difficult. The irony of this being called a Mango Roll was that the mango taste was almost non-existent as some of the other flavours from the sauces were much stronger. The crispy prawn inside made for a nice texture with every bite.

The third roll we ordered was the Caterpillar Roll, which consisted of double prawn tempura, avocado, cucumber, crab meat, and topped with sliced avocado. This was our favourite roll. The sauces mixed well with the crispy tempura and the soft avocado on top made for the perfect mix of crunch and smoothness.

The restaurant itself is nicely lit with a decent ambience, although some of the tables near the front feel squished together between the movable wooden walls, especially as you try to squeeze into a chain. The service is excellent and friendly and the food came very quickly.

Overall, Sushi Gen is definitely worth trying, especially if you’re into trying some different specialty rolls.
