Osaka Island Japanese Restaurant was a wonderful discovery. The restaurant is located along Edmonds Street, one block west of Canada Way at the cross street with New Vista Place, and features a full menu of sushi, sashimi, party trays, and items from the kitchen.

We started by ordering 3 rolls from the specialty roll menu. One of the highlights was the Pacific Roll, which has wild salmon, tuna, and avocado inside and mango and sauce drizzled on top. The matching of salmon and tuna with the sweetness of the avocado made for a delicious result. The Crispy Roll contained yam tempura and cream cheese inside with crunchy bits and sauce on top. This roll was also very good and better from most rolls we’ve experienced with cream cheese because the cream cheese was minimal and not overwhelming the other flavours.

The last roll from the specialty menu we tried is one that would be popular with vegetarians. The Summer Roll has asparagus, spinach, and sesame on the inside and avocado and sauce on top. The asparagus was well cooked so that it wasn’t chewy and the avocado smoothed out the flavours of the roll. One other meatless roll that we tried was from the regular menu and called the Firecracker Roll. We were assuming this was a spicy roll but it wasn’t and was simply made of yam and pumpkin tempura. This was a good roll too, nothing fancy in comparison to the specialty rolls but a great addition to the regular menu.

The menu also had several cone combinations that came with an assortment of 3 cones. We tried the Vegetable Cone Combo which was consisted of a vegetable cone, a yam cone, and a avocado cone. The cones were all quite large and full of yam, avocado, carrot, cucumber, and not just stuffed full of rice. We really enjoyed the cones and thought it was nice to be able to order an assortment of items in a combo format.

For a Saturday night, the restaurant was way quieter than it should have been. It was surprising to be one of the few patrons as Osaka Island has great sushi, a really large assortment of food on their menu, the atmosphere inside is clean and warm, there’s ample parking, and the prices are very reasonable. All of these attributes should be a recipe for success!

We won’t hesitate in returning to eat at Osaka Island Japanese Restaurant again as there were lots of other items on their large menu that we are interested in trying. There are lots of great meat and vegetarian options, everything was priced well, no lineups, easy parking, why wouldn’t we go back?
