Located in a small mall on the southwest corner of North Road and Lougheed Highway, North Road Sushi has a long history of offering authentic Japanese food in the area. The restaurant has some great specialty rolls and a large variety of options, including sushi, donburis, and noodles.
The Mega Roll was one of the Specialty Rolls and it looked different from sushi rolls at other restaurants. The Mega Roll consisted of Avocado, salmon skin, green onion, deep fried crab meat, unagi, tobiko, and sesame seeds. This specialty roll was excellent. We initially thought this might have too many things, leading to too many flavours but the mix was perfect. The green onion gave a slightly sharp taste but it cut through the other flavours of the salmon skin and crab meat in a nice way. The avocado provided that smoothness while the tobiko gave a bit of crunch. This was one of the best rolls we’ve tried in Burnaby.

The second specialty roll we tried was the Mango Roll, which was made of crab meat, avocado, cucumber and topped with mango, mango sauce, and sesame seeds. This roll could have been called a Mango California Roll because it was basically a California Roll topped with Mango. The crab meat, avocado, and mango make for a delicious combination, so this roll was quite good.

For vegetarian sushi rolls, we ordered three rolls and they all came out on the same plate. The first was called the AAC Roll, which stood for Avocado, Asparagus, and Cucumber. Adding the asparagus was a nice step away from the traditional avocado roll or kappa roll.
The second vegetarian roll was the Tofu Roll, which consisted of deep fried tofu with sweet chili sauce and sesame seeds on top. The tofu was nicely fried and not soggy, having a bit of crispiness to it. The chili sauce was a great addition to give a bit of flavour and kick to the roll. This was a delicious combination.
The third vegetarian roll we ordered was the Spicy Yam Tempura Roll, which had yam tempura, cucumber, spicy mayo sauce, and sesame seeds. The yam tempura was also nicely prepared and not soggy and the spiciness with the mayo sauce gave a slight flavourful kick. Another great vegetarian roll.

The ambience is mediocre and it wasn’t particularly busy on the Friday night that we went. The service was excellent and waiter was really friendly. Being located on the busy corner of North Road and Lougheed Highway makes it a little challenging getting to it, depending what direction you are coming from, but there is access to the Rochester Street one block south of the intersection and there is ample parking in the parking lot.
North Road Sushi has some great sushi rolls and the service excellent, so we will be going back when we’re around the Lougheed Mall area.
