Eating at Kato Japanese and Chinese Restaurant on Hastings, just up from Boundary, was a strange experience. We were there on a Saturday night from 6:30pm until about 7:15pm and not a single other person was in, or came into, the restaurant besides the staff. The food was actually decent, but the vibe just creeped us out.
Due to the “dead-ness”, we feared the worst and ordered Bento Boxes, hoping there would be at least some stuff that is good. We ordered the Seafood Box which consisted of Teriyaki cod, tiger prawn and vegetable tempura, sashimi, California roll, and deep fried scallops. It was surprisingly good and a nice selection of seafood, especially the tiger prawn tempura which is something you don’t normally come across at other restaurants.
The other bento box that we ordered was the Vegetable box, which came with Vegetable teriyaki, a vegetable roll, tempura, agadashi tofu, vegetable tempura and fruit. Vegetable teriyaki is never that exciting no matter where you have it but it’s sometimes one of the only options for vegetarians on the menu. The vegetable roll was pretty good and the Agadashi Tofu was very good.
We were a bit hungry still after the bento boxes, so we ordered an additional Avocado Roll which ended up being good as well. It’s hard to go wrong with an Avocado Roll.
This restaurant has really got to do some work on their interior as it feels like a Chinese restaurant from the 80’s with it’s drab colours, dull lighting, and old tv mounted in a corner near the ceiling. A fresh coat of paint, changing the lighting to something more modern, replacing the flooring, and upgrading the furniture would greatly improve the interior look. Some lights on the outside and a more “welcoming” sign would get more people noticing this restaurant as there is certainly no shortage of traffic that passes through this area along Hastings Street daily.
The food is decent, not the best but certainly above average. The vibe is dead and this is not a restaurant to take anyone who you are trying to impress.
