Izumi Sushi is located in the food court at Metrotown Mall and was great for a quick japanese food fix while taking a break from Christmas shopping. We were expecting a fairly standard menu of items, which they have, but to our surprise, they also had several specialty rolls and some kitchen items as well.
The one specialty roll we decided to try was the Dragon Roll, which was a dynamite roll with cucumber inside and unagi, avocado, and masago on top. This roll was actually pretty good and the was a definite crunch to the prawn tempura inside, which went well with the soft unagi and avocado on the outside. We tried one of the pictured combos, Sushi Combo D, which had a deep fried fish roll, 2 salmon nigiri, and 2 tuna nigiri. One of the problems with the menu is it doesn’t actually say what the rolls are in the combos and when I asked, I was told it was a deep fried “fish” roll. I think the “fish” was salmon though but the rolls itself was mediocre at best. This is what we expected from the mall.
We also ordered a Vegetable Combo which came with a vegetable roll, a kappa roll, and 2 inari. We found these rolls to be very disappointing and having, almost, a sour taste to them. The rolls were not good and we wouldn’t try them again. The only thing that was decent was the order of Agedashi Tofu, which was well cooked and had a light crispiness to it.
It was a weekend, a few weeks before Christmas around mid-day and the food court is the last place you want to be in Metrotown but that’s when we ate at Izumi. Despite the complete chaos and what seemed like a random ordering process, our order was made quite quickly and they got everything correct. My guess is a number of the items we ordered were already pre-made and sitting there, ready to go.
If you’re looking for a quick sushi-fix while at Metrotown, then make sure you order one of the specialty rolls from the menu at Izumi otherwise you’ll be very disappointed with the sushi. Our conclusion, sushi and shopping mall food courts were not made for each other.
