Huku-Ya is one of those hidden gems of the sushi world where few people know about this restaurant with its excellent food. Just about everything we’ve eaten here has been really good and it feels as though effort has been put into making each item of our dinner.
Located in the north end of the Lougheed Mall parking lot, next to Red Robin, this restaurant is easy to miss. They have a large menu of items that include sushi rolls, nigiri, bento boxes, donburi, teriyaki, and various other options from the grill. There is also a stripped down all-you-can eat menu for those who are really hungry.
Some highlights for us include the Spicy Salmon or Tuna Crunch Rolls that are covered in a mountain of delicious tempura and spicy sauce. The Agedashi Tofu is pleasantly different as it’s got a light batter and doesn’t have that soggy taste like many others places. For those willing to try something a bit different, the sushi roll with backed cheese is fabulous, although quite heavy and will leave you feeling happy and full.
The atmosphere is warm inside and its got that “family-run” charm to it. Service is pretty good overall, although getting the billing may require some hand waving. This is not a restaurant to go to if you are in a rush, rather a place to sit and enjoy your dinner experience while sampling a variety of different Japanese food.
