Sushi S serves some great, fresh Japanese food with a large selection of specialty sushi rolls, sashimi, and nigiri. Centrally located on Willingdon and Moscrop in a small strip mall, Sushi S is a short drive from BCIT, Burnaby Hostpital, and a number of other large companies located nearby.

There were a lot of specialty rolls on the menu and we were eager to try some of these. First was the Red Roll, which consisted of a scallop roll based with spicy tuna and spicy, crispy tempura bits on top. Very delicious as the flavours blended well and the crunchy bits added a nice texture. For the second choice, we took a bit of a chance by ordering the Munch Roll, which is made up of a spicy tuna roll base with baked scallop and melted cheddar cheese on top. The idea of combining fish and cheese is somewhat repulsive but don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! It was wonderful, a true surprise but the combination of ingredients makes this roll rich and a good one to share.

Normally when we look through the list of specialty rolls, it’s rare to actually find a vegetarian option but Sushi S had a roll called the Vegevege Roll which we had to try. It was wrapped in bean paper and had black rice, asparagus, broccoli, carrot, mango, avocado, cucumber, raddish, and oshinko (mushroom) in it, basically, everything! It was one of the best vegetarian rolls we have tried and highly recommended, even for non-vegetarians. We also tried the Avocado Roll and Mango Roll which were also very good, well made, and not rushed like many other places.

Normally we order a few Nigiri to try but the waitress mentioned a couple of very fresh fish options they had, so we ended up ordering a variety that included  Salmon, Smoked Salmon, Unagi, Amaebi (sweet shrimp), Avocado, and Shiitake. The pieces of fish were not as large as some other restaurants but all were very fresh, particularly the Amaebi.

The service was a bit slow on this particular night but the staff apologized many times and explained it was due to a large group that had come in. The chef ended up giving us free ice cream to make up for it, which was a nice gesture. The atmosphere is nice with great lighting. There are some large TVs and I think the intention is to try to make the restaurant into a sports bar. I’m not a big fan of sports playing on large TVs when I’m out for a nice sushi dinner, so next time I’ll be sure to ask for a table out of view the TVs.

A great experience as the food at Sushi S is excellent. We will definitely return and next time, we will bring family and friends.
