Looking to impress your friends with how much sushi you can eat? Fish On Rice has been a well known all-you-can-eat (AYCE) sushi restaurant located above Earls on Kingsway, just west of Willingdon. They also offer a regular menu for those who aren’t as hungry but if others at your table are ordering AYCE, then you will have to as well.
We ordered the AYCE menu to experience what Fish On Rice is known for and the food was of your typical AYCE quality; not impressive, just ok. Some of the items we ate included Avocado Rolls, Dynamite Rolls, Cones (Unagi, Scallop, Seaweed), Nigiri (Salmon, Toro, Tai, Tamago, Inari), Sashimi, Prawn Tempura, Meatballs, Yakitori, and Spring Rolls. The selection was a bit low in comparison to other AYCE restaurants I have been to in the past but there were enough sushi rolls and items from the kitchen to make it interesting.
What stood out was that the service was really poor and unfriendly, starting from the moment we sat down. We had problems getting tea, paper slips to fill out our order, and we eventually gave up trying to flag someone down to get the bill and just went up to the register to pay. The staff were very unfriendly, never smiled, and made us feel awkward ordering. That experience turned us off as it was something you rarely experience in the Lower Mainland.
If I was really, really hungry, I might go back but based on the average food quality and the really poor service, it is doubtful that I will return anytime soon. You’re better off looking for other AYCE options and hopefully Fish On Rice will make some improvements to their service and menu.
