Located at the corner of Edmonds and 6th Street, Sushi Modo is a busy restaurants that serves up a wide selection of sushi and Japanese food. The menu at Sushi Modo has a lot of different specialty rolls and and the presentation of the food is quite nice.
The Dynamite Dragon Roll was the first roll we ordered and it has 2 pieces of prawn tempura, avocado, and cucumber on the inside and topped with pieces of BBQ eel (unagi) and avocado. The roll was excellent and very smooth and flavourful. Sometimes the prawn tempura becomes soggy at other restaurants but the crunch was still in the roll at Sushi Modo.
The second roll we tried was the Spicy Tuna Crunch, which was basically a spicy tuna roll (rice on the outside) with crunchy tempura bits piled on top. It was a nice alternative to the standard spicy tuna roll having crunchy bits and had a nice taste to it.
For the first specialty vegetarian roll, we tried the Mango Dragon Roll and it was like a dream. Inside was yam tempura and avocado and on top were slices of mango and sauce drizzle. This roll was nothing short of spectacular, with a bit of crunch to it and the smooth taste of the mango. One of the best combinations in vegetarian sushi is mango with avocado and this roll nailed it!
The second specialty vegetarian roll we tried was the Mamma Mia Roll, which has yam tempura and avocado on the inside and is topped with avocado slices and crispy yam tempura. This roll was a lot of yam and avocado but it was great and the crispy yam was a nice addition and something different from a lot of crunch rolls.
The last roll we tried was the Spicy Tofu Roll, which has tofu in the middle and is drenched in spicy sauce. Honestly, this is a roll that unless you’re willing to try something quite different, you might as well skip. It was ok but really not all that exciting. We would have preferred to get a dish of Agedashi Tofu if we wanted tofu.
As a bonus, we tried some Avocado Nigiri, which are simply slices of avocado on top of rice. If you like avocado, you’ll love these!
We really enjoyed the experience at Sushi Modo and the interior had a nice, energetic vibe to it. The specialty rolls were really good and it didn’t feel like the sushi was rushed and made sloppily. The Friday night that we went, the restaurant was extremely busy and we had to leave our number and were given a call when a table was ready. The service was good despite being so busy. The only downside is parking is not great at the busy intersection. While we were told there was parking in the back behind the restaurant, it was really dark and didn’t feel safe, so we opted to find parking along Edmonds and walk more than a block.
The food at Sushi Modo was great and, looking around at nearby tables, the other patrons looked as though they had interesting orders. We’ll definitely return and try other items on the menu.
