Nao Sushi is a popular restaurant located on Kingsway near the Highgate Village Shopping Centre. The menu has a wide variety of Japanese food, including several specialty sushi rolls.
The Aburi Spicy Tuna Roll was the first specialty roll we ordered and it is a really fancy California Roll, with seared tuna on top and drizzled in spicy sauce. This roll did not even resemble the taste of a California Roll, it was so much better. The seared tuna added to the uniqueness of the flavour.
The second specialty sushi roll that we ordered was aptly named the Burnaby Roll. It consisted of marinated tuna, avocado, and masago, with crunchy bits and topped with spicy sauce. Despite the simple name of the roll and uncertainty of what the relationship is to Burnaby, the Burnaby Roll was excellent. The marinated tuna tasted wonderful and was perfectly matched with avocado. The crunchy bits were a nice addition.
The Mango California Roll is another specialty roll and yet another fancy California Roll. It has crab meat and avocado on the inside and is topped with delicious slices of mango. Think of it as a deluxe California Roll that has some mango, which is a great addition!
The BC Roll was a simple roll with warm salmon, salmon skin, and drizzled in a teriyaki style sauce. It did not have the crispiness that some BC Rolls have and had a lot of salmon in it. It was good but a little different.
For vegetarian rolls, we tried the Yam Avocado Roll and the Mango Avocado Roll. Both of these rolls were avocado rolls with rice on the outside, along with the addition of either yam or mango. Both were great but the Mango Avocado Roll was our favourite as the avocado seems to be better paired with mango.
Lastly, we ordered a few Nigiri to try, including a Toro, Salmon, Saba, and Unagi Nigiri. All had nice sized pieces of fish and tasted fresh and flavourful.
Nao Sushi is often one of the busier sushi restaurants in the area and the restaurant was pretty full the night that we visited. The staff were great and service was excellent. Despite being so busy, there’s more space in the restaurant and it doesn’t have that “frantic-ness” that some other sushi restaurants have where it feels so cramped and there are people waiting and watching until you finish your meal.
The experience and food at Nao Sushi were enjoyable. We would return when we’re near Highgate Village.
