The Crunchy Go-Go Roll at Sushi Bella in Burnaby.

Located along Kingsway, east of Metrotown near Royal Oak Avenue, Sushi Bella has a funky decor inside and some creative and delicious tasting sushi. While new to the Burnaby area in mid-2015, the restaurant has several other locations located throughout the Metro Vancouver region and, therefore, is no newcomer to the sushi scene.

Fresh Box Sushi & Rolls

Located on the 2nd level of High Gate Village (near the Save On Foods entrance) along east Kingsway, Fresh Box Sushi is a tiny hole-in-the-wall. The sushi restaurant primarily provides take-out as there are only 10 chairs at a few tables to sit in the cramped quarters with a few additional tables outside. We did decide to eat inside though but the atmosphere was not enjoyable as we had to push two small tables together to make enough room for three people, there was a huge pool of soy sauce on the floor, a constant stream of people coming in to order and pickup food, and you had to stand up and order at the cash register. Aside from this, let’s talk about the food.

Dragon Roll at Black Dragon

With a big, red “grand opening” sign on the front, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to eat at Black Dragon Sushi on Kingsway. The restaurant is located 1-block east of Metrotown on the other side of Kingsway from the London Drugs and is one of about half-a-dozen sushi restaurants within a few minutes radius of each other. With the stiff nearby competition, Black Dragon Sushi tries to separate themselves with their selection of specialty sushi rolls.

Sui Sha Ya

Phone: (604) 433-7881

Sui Sha Ya has been in business for longer than most all-you-can-eat (AYCE) sushi restaurants in Burnaby. The restaurant is located in Metrotown Shopping Center on the east side of the mall on the lower level, just outside The Bay. They have a reasonably priced AYCE lunch menu as well as a dinner menu with more deluxe items. They also have a regular menu of items with several specialty rolls, nigiri, and other entrees of interest.

If you’re not looking for Tang Tang Sushi, you won’t notice it. It’s well hidden in a corridor that connects the front and back of the shopping mall on the northwest corner of Kingsway and Willingdon, by the IGA grocery store. The small restaurant is family-run and features a good selection of rolls and cooked items on the menu.

Flying Dragon Roll at Tomoya Sushi

Located near Metrotown along Nelson Avenue, Tomoya Japanese Restaurant has a large selection of sushi and specialty items from the kitchen. The food is fairly good, definitely above your average sushi restaurant and each item on the menu is accompanied by a photograph to help you visualize what you’re going to eat. The photos, however, make it more difficult to choose what to order!

Dragonfly Roll at Asakusa Sushi

Located along the north side of Kingsway across from Metropolis, Asakusa Sushi is one of a handful of Japanese restaurants in the area in stiff competition with each other. The menu is quite large with a selection of Sushi Rolls, Nigiri, Robata (BBQ), Pan Fried Noodles, Donburis, and even a Vegetarian section that makes it easy to choose from the meatless options.

Yakko Sushi Japanese Restaurant

Tower Sashimi

If you don’t take transit around Metrotown, chances are you have not seen Yakko Sushi, a small restaurant hidden in the corridor between the bus loop and Station Square. We had the company of Tiny Bites and family on this evening, which was a sushi reunion of sorts as I had last eaten at Yakko when Tiny Bites took me there 12 years ago. This restaurant has been open for quite a few years and judging by consistent traffic that kept coming in to eat or pickup takeout, they are quite popular.
