Restaurant Permanently Closed

Sui Sha Ya in Metrotown has closed. A new restaurant has opened at this location but they do not serve sushi.

Sui Sha Ya has been in business for longer than most all-you-can-eat (AYCE) sushi restaurants in Burnaby. The restaurant is located in Metrotown Shopping Center on the east side of the mall on the lower level, just outside The Bay. They have a reasonably priced AYCE lunch menu as well as a dinner menu with more deluxe items. They also have a regular menu of items with several specialty rolls, nigiri, and other entrees of interest.

We weren’t hungry enough on this night to justify the AYCE, so we ordered off the menu and decided to try a few items from their special menu. First was the Aburi Sushi which was a plate of Nigiri that consisted of 3-pieces of Toro and 3-pieces of Salmon, lightly seared on the outside, topped with a bit of mayo and habanero masago. On the initial taste, the seared effect was strong and surprising in a good way but after a few bites, that tasted become more of a burnt taste which then lasted after the sushi was eaten. The idea seemed like a good one but the Nigiri was over-seared and it was difficult finishing all of these pieces.

We also tried the Dragon Roll from the special menu and Unagi Roll from the regular menu. The Dragon Roll was made of  BBQ eel, shrimp tempura, avocado, tobiko, mayo, and unagi sauce and was good but well presented on the plate. With BBQ eel and cucumber inside, the Unagi Roll was also good too but there just felt like there’s room for improvement and the food ordered off the menu should be a much bigger step up from the AYCE dishes.

The restaurant was busy and we seemed to be one of the only tables who did not order from the AYCE menu. The service was fast and friendly and the restaurant is conveniently located if you are shopping at Metrotown and want to sit down somewhere other than in the food court. The only complaint about the restaurant was there was a lot of rice under the table from a previous patron that should have been cleaned up.

Overall, the food off the menu wasn’t the greatest but it was good and filled a sushi void. I would consider returning if we were in the area looking for an all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant. However, the Metrotown neighbourhood has a lot of options for sushi restaurants within a 3-block area and there are several other places that offer a much better experience with their specialty rolls.
