Located on East Hastings in Burnaby, one-block east of Kensington Mall, Hong Sushi is  a hole-in-the-wall with just a few tables and stools along the front window. However, don’t let the tiny place fool you as the sushi is very good and they run a very busy takeout service with a fairly large menu of choices.

Hong Sushi has a fairly large specialty roll section so we started by ordering three rolls that we hadn’t tried before. First, the Panda Roll was a vegetarian roll made of yam, asparagus, and had sliced avocado on top. The asparagus was perfectly cooked and the flavours meshed perfectly for one of the better non-meat rolls. Next, we tried the Dinosaur Roll which had soft shell crab tempura with tuna, salmon, ebi, and chopped scallop with green onion and spicy sauce on top. While this roll was pretty good, it could have been a bit spicier and maybe too many ingredients meant the individual flavours of the seafood couldn’t be differentiated from. Lastly, we tried the Twin Scallop Roll which was made of deep fried scallop, asparagus tempura and had chopped scallop and tobiko on top. This roll was the best with both types of scallop acting as a different taste and texture with each bite.

We also ordered a Vegetable Combo which came with a Vegetable Roll, Avocado Roll, and 2 Inari. These standard rolls were above average tasting and the tofu on the Inari were very sweet. Finally, we ordered 2 smoked salmon Nigiri which were fairly standard tasting and well put together.

One of the big complaints about eating in at Hong Sushi is everything is served on disposable plates. Not only does it make the experience feel really cheap, it also means there’s a lot of garbage produced from your meal. The restuarant only has 2 tables of four, 1 table for two, and a few seats along the front window but there must have been almost a dozen people coming and going with takeout orders as we ate. This is definitely not a restaurant to take a date to, more of a place to grab a quick bit or order some sushi to take home.

Hong Sushi was a surprise for the size of the restaurant and the specialty rolls were pretty good for a very reasonable price. It’s close to Burnaby Mountain, just down the hill from SFU, and is a good takeout dinner stop for commuters just before they hit the Barnet Highway out to the Tri-Cities.
