Yo Sushi on Urbanspoon

Yo Sushi on Hastings Street in North Burnaby opened in late 2012 to plenty of fanfare in the local community newspapers. It’s located next to the famous Antons Pasta Restaurant but you won’t have to stand outside in the cold for an hour waiting to get in. The menu has a large selection of sushi, kitchen items, and combos but it’s the full page of specialty rolls that stands out.

We ordered two specialty rolls from the menu starting with the Crunchy Roll, which consisted of prawn tempura, asparagus topped with crumbs, tobiko and sweet soy sauce. The presentation was one of the best we’ve seen and included different coloured fish eggs on top and well organized pieces of sushi. The roll tasted great and the sweet soy sauce added a different flavour that’s not common with sushi rolls.

The second specialty roll we tried was the Yo House Roll which includes BBQ eel, salmon, tuna, ebi, tai, hotate, cucumber, avocado, all topped with tobiko. This roll was $16 and it’s understandable why it’s so expensive since it has pretty much everything in it, however it was very disappointing. The roll was too large to eat and to pick up properly, and it just tasted like a bunch of random fish flavours. Save your money and avoid this roll or try a couple of other things on the menu for much cheaper.

The Vegetarian Combo we ordered came with a Avocado Roll, Asparagus Roll, and Vegetable Roll. The sushi was quite good and it was put together well. It was nice to see a vegetarian section on the menu but it would have been a bonus if there had been a vegetarian specialty roll. We also ordered Gomae, some Nigiri and Agedashi Tofu nd they were all really tasty too. The tofu was particularly good as it was perfectly fried and sitting in the right amount of sauce.

The vibe of the restaurant is nice as its got that funky, trendy feel to it. The only complaint was that it seemed like everything on the menu was a bit on the expensive side or just priced above some of the other sushi restaurants located nearby. The food was overall pretty good but was it worth the extra cost, that’s debatable.

Despite the price, Yo Sushi got our attention and it’s somewhere that we’d go back to and try some other items off the menu. There were several specialty rolls that caught our attention, we’ll just make sure to avoid their House Roll.
