Sushi Moto is a small, funky restaurant tucked away next to the Holdom Skytrain Station off of Lougheed Highway. The restaurant has an interesting selection of sushi and other Japanese inspired menu items as well as quite the collection of characters and other figurines  in a display case and decorating the walls.

The first thing that caught my eye was the Moto Orange which is a hollowed-out orange full of spicy sashimi in the middle. I had never seen this before so the novelty alone made it worth ordering and I was not disappointed. The flavour of the peel gave the sashimi a gentle tang and the orange flavour was the perfect match to highlight that of the sashimi. The sashimi was also marinated and well prepared making this a must have appetizer.

The menu is full of specialty rolls so we chose to order two from the menu. First was the Moto Signature Roll, which had soybean skin, salmon, tuna, cucumber, avocado, tamago, crabmeat, masago, and on top, spicy mayo and unagi sauce. The works! This roll was presented well and tasted it great. The soybean skin provided a lighter texture from the traditional seaweed wrap. The second specialty roll we tried was the Volcano Roll which was a california roll with seared chopped scallop ontop and green onion, misonnaise (yes, “miso” mayonnaise), and spicy sauce.

It was disappointing to see no vegetarian specialty rolls with so many on the menu, so we ordered the Newtype Veggie Combo which came with a Vegetable Tempura Roll, a Mango Roll, and an Avocado Roll.

The biggest complaint about Moto Sushi is its location and the lack of parking. There is some pay parking along Holdom and then some free parking further down on Kingsland Drive but you feel like you are putting your life at risk crossing by the 3-way intersection with no sidewalks. For a restaurant tucked away behind a Skytrain Station, don’t let that fool you in thinking that it doesn’t get busy because it was full when we where there with several people waiting to be seated.

A pleasant discovery and the Moto Orange is something we will definitely take our friends back to experience. When we paid, they gave us a punch card and after going so many times, we get 10% off so how could we not want to return?
