With a big, red “grand opening” sign on the front, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to eat at Black Dragon Sushi on Kingsway. The restaurant is located 1-block east of Metrotown on the other side of Kingsway from the London Drugs and is one of about half-a-dozen sushi restaurants within a few minutes radius of each other. With the stiff nearby competition, Black Dragon Sushi tries to separate themselves with their selection of specialty sushi rolls.

We ordered 4 specialty rolls from the menu, 2 were seafood and 2 vegetarian. The first was the delicious Dragon Roll, which consisted of unagi tempura, tamagotchi, cucumber, and was topped with avocado. The second was the Sunshine Roll, which had prawn tempura, crab meat, and was topped with tai tempura. Both rolls were really tasty and presented beautifully on their plates, with sauce drizzled on the side and wasabi neatly arranged.

Often when we try sushi restaurants with specialty rolls, they forget about the vegetarians and only have rolls with fish in them. No Black Dragon Sushi as they actually had 2 specialty rolls with no meat. First was the Garden Roll, which had avocado, cucumber, asparagus, and was topped with yam tempura. This roll was excellent, the tempura on-top was nicely done, and the asparagus was not too chewy, which occasionally happens. It was the second non-meat sushi roll that we were most excited about because it had banana tempura in it. The Phoenix Roll was made of banana tempura, avocado, cucumber, and topped with mango. The verdict on this roll was that it was really good but ideal for a group of people to share and have 1 – 2 pieces each as it was too sweet for 1-person. We also thought this would make a great dessert roll, an idea which we haven’t come across in any of the restaurants we’ve been to.

The restaurant had only been open for a month and the waitress was kind enough to quickly run through the menu and point out the highlights. Black Dragon Sushi’s dinner menu also had a number of options where you could combine a teriyaki plate with your choice of 2-items, such as sushi rolls, from a list. The inside of the restaurant had funky lighting and a bar at the back but I just couldn’t think how difficult it could be getting a loyal customer base in an area so saturated with sushi restaurants.

We were very happy with the sushi at Black Dragon Sushi and the specialty rolls were on par with some of the other great places we’ve been to like Sushi S and Osaka Sushi. Looking forward to going back and having the Phoenix Roll with the banana tempura in the near future.
